People are often unclear about what mentoring exactly is, and how it differs from coaching.
In a nutshell, mentoring is about sharing and giving the benefit of one’s experience. Based on the mentee’s clearly defined needs and objectives, the mentor will tap his or her experience to help the mentee move forward or solve a specific issue.
Coaching is about questioning. Encouraging the coachee to ask him or herself the right questions which will make them advance towards their goals in a way consistent and coherent with their beliefs and values.
Beyond the required personal professional experience, a mentor will need, at every instant, to demonstrate the following competences: listening, empathy, no judgment, generosity, passionate about people development, curiosity. And many more.
Mentoring is a long-term relationship (vs a couple of ad-hoc sessions)
